About 2.5 million Americans are affected by Rheumatoid arthritis and affects women three to five times more often than men. It worsens between the ages of 40 and 60 and is 4 times more common in smokers than non-smokers.
…rheumatos = "flowing", the suffix -oid meaning "in the shape of", arthr meaning "joint" and the suffix -itis, a "condition involving inflammation"
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes the immune system to attack the joints. The membrane lining or joint lining (synovium) becomes inflamed and can lead to pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function which can be permanent. It also can cause inflammation of your tear glands, salivary glands, the lining of your heart and lungs, and the lungs themselves.
"I have rheumatoid arthritis, and nothing helped. My hands and fingers were crumpled together with pain and I could not hold anything with my hands. I could not even make my own bed. Since I started with Essies tea one month ago, I can use my fingers and hands again and the pain is gone. Thank the Lord for this tea, I feel wonderful." ...More...
Rheumatoid arthritis progresses in three stages where the first stage is the swelling of the synovial lining which causes stiffness, pain, redness warmth and swelling around the joint. The second stage is the rapid division and growth of cells (pannus), which causes the joint lining (synovium) to thicken. In the last stage, the inflamed cells release enzymes which may digest bone and cartilage. The joint can lose its shape and alignment, causing more pain and loss of movement.
Because it is a chronic disease, it continues indefinitely and may not go away. It is also a systemic disease and can affect other organs in the body. Early diagnosis and treatment of the disease is critical if you want to live a productive life. RA typically affects the small joints of the hands and feet first in a symmetrical pattern, meaning that if one knee or hand is involved, the other one also is. It is often worse in the morning or after a rest.
For some people, RA lasts only a few months or a year or two and goes away without causing any noticeable damage. Other people have mild or moderate forms of the disease, with periods of worsening symptoms. (flares & remissions). Some have a severe form of the disease that is active most of the time and leads to serious joint damage and disability.
